The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is an engineering entrance assessment conducted for admission to various engineering colleges in India. It is constituted by two different examinations – JEE Main and the JEE Advanced. The exams are of the objective pattern and are conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA).
JEE Main: It has two papers, Paper-1 and Paper-2. Candidates may opt for either or both of them. Paper-1 is for admission to B.E./B.Tech courses and is conducted in a Computer Based Test (CBT) mode only. Paper-2 is for admission in B.Arch and B.Planning courses and is conducted in the Computer Based Test (CBT) mode only for Mathematics and Aptitude, and in Pen & Paper mode for the Drawing Test.
JEE Advanced: The students who qualify JEE Mains are eligible for JEE Advanced. It is for admission to Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), and Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore. Only the students selected in JEE Mains are eligible for JEE Advanced.
The examinations cover questions from physics, chemistry, and mathematics, and require a high level of understanding of these subjects, along with problem-solving abilities and time management skills.
Tips to prepare for JEE Mains exam and JEE Advanced
Here are some tips to help you prepare for these examinations:
Understand the Syllabus and Exam Pattern: The first step is to understand the entire syllabus and the pattern of the examination. Break down the syllabus into different topics and understand the weightage of each topic.
Prepare a Study Plan: Once you know the syllabus, it’s crucial to create a well-structured study plan. It should include not just study hours but also regular breaks to avoid burnout. Distribute the time accordingly for each subject, considering your strengths and weaknesses.
Follow NCERT Books: NCERT textbooks should be your primary source of learning. They are fundamental to building your concepts and have been written in a very student-friendly language. Start by reading these books and solving all the exercise problems given at the end of every chapter.
Take Mock Tests: Regular jee mains mock tests can help you understand the examination pattern and improve your time management skills. Analysing your performance in these tests will help you understand where you stand, what topics you are weak at, and where you need to improve.
Use Standard Reference Books: After gaining proficiency in NCERT books, refer to standard books like H.C Verma for Physics, R.D Sharma for Mathematics, and O.P Tandon for Chemistry. These books have detailed theory and a variety of problems that can strengthen your understanding of the concepts.
Clear Doubts Regularly: Make sure to clear all your doubts immediately. Never hesitate to ask for help, whether it’s from your teachers, friends, or online platforms.
Consistent Revision: Regular revision is the key to retain what you have learned. Make sure to revise the topics regularly, especially the ones you find difficult.
Take Care of Your Health: During preparation, it’s essential to take care of your health. Eat a balanced diet and ensure you get enough sleep. Regular exercise can also help to keep stress at bay.
Stay Positive and Motivated: Preparation for exams like JEE can be stressful. It’s crucial to stay positive and motivated. Surround yourself with positive people, take breaks when you feel overwhelmed, and engage in activities that you enjoy.
Solve Previous Year Question Papers: Solving past papers can give you a better understanding of the exam pattern, the type of questions asked, and improve your speed and accuracy.
How to Create a Study Schedule for JEE Mains and Advanced
Creating a study schedule for the JEE Mains and Advanced is a task that needs careful planning and discipline. It involves considering your current level of understanding, your strengths and weaknesses in different subjects, the time available before the exam, and your personal learning style. Here’s a step-by-step guide to create an effective study schedule for JEE Mains and Advanced:
Assess your current level of understanding: Identify the topics in the syllabus that you already understand well and those that you find challenging. This will help you understand how much time you need to spend on each topic.
Set your study goals: Define what you want to achieve at the end of each study session. It could be understanding a certain concept, solving a particular number of problems, or revising a topic.
Allocate time effectively: Divide your time in a manner that suits your needs and personal circumstances. Dedicate more time to subjects or topics you find difficult. Make sure you balance your time between studying, revising, and solving practice problems.
Plan your study sessions: Break down your study time into manageable sessions. Typically, a session of 40-50 minutes followed by a 10-minute break works well for most students. During each session, focus on one particular topic or subject.
Include time for revisions: Make sure you include ample time for revision in your study schedule. Revisions help you retain information and understand concepts better.
Don’t forget to take breaks: While studying is important, it’s equally important to take breaks to avoid burnout. Schedule short breaks during your study sessions and also schedule one day per week where you take a longer break to relax and recharge.
Review and adjust your study schedule: Regularly review your study schedule and adjust it as necessary. As you progress in your preparation, some topics may take less time than anticipated while others may take more. Make sure your schedule is flexible to accommodate these changes.
The key to an effective study schedule is to stay disciplined and stick to it. It might be hard in the beginning, but with time, it will become a habit.
